OpenAPI ↔ RPG Round-trip

RPGTools closes a long-standing gap in the IBM i modernization ecosystem: a Design-First workflow where OpenAPI specs and RPG source stay in sync — automatically, bidirectionally, with 96% round-trip fidelity and zero runtime dependency.

What this demo shows

1 — Import & Generate

Open pet-store.yaml (OpenAPI 3.0.4, 19 operations, 6 schemas). RPGTools renders a live Swagger UI panel instantly — no server required. Generate pet_store.rpgle: 1,529 lines, 19 procedures, 6 structures, fully annotated with OpenAPI metadata.

2 — Navigate & Edit

The RPG Structure panel detects 19 REST endpoints, 21 constants and 6 data structures automatically. Navigate to Pet_t, add a new field with metadata annotations (@#type, @#minLength) — directly in RPG source.

3 — Auto-sync & Validate

Ctrl+S triggers automatic synchronization. The new field propagates to pet-store.yaml with minLength: 1 preserved. Validation runs instantly — 0 errors, all consistency checks passed.

Build vs. Buy

What it takes to reach this point from scratch.

Building internally

  • RPG parser — free-form + fixed-format, SQLRPGLE, includes
  • OpenAPI 3.0.3 generator & reverse converter
  • VS Code extension (diagnostics, hover, completion, code actions)
  • Validation framework (44 codes, 4 severity levels)
  • CLI, web interface, enterprise config system
  • 4,900+ automated tests, i18n (5 languages)
  • Documentation, packaging, VSIX distribution

Realistic estimate: 18–24 months of dedicated senior engineering — IBM i domain expertise required throughout.

Acquiring RPGTools

  • Production-ready engine, day one
  • Full source code — no black box
  • Existing test suite validates every change
  • Documented architecture, zero hidden dependencies
  • OpenAPI 3.0.3 audited across 82 features
  • Transfer includes onboarding support
  • Immediate integration into your existing product

Time to integration: weeks, not months. Your team builds on top of a proven foundation — not around an unknown parser.
